September 8 is 988 Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and remind people that support is available when they need it.
Mental health challenges can happen to anyone. You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, overwhelming stress, emotional distress, or a difficult life situation. You don’t have to wait until things become unbearable before reaching out.
You can call or text 988 to connect with trained crisis support.
At Health Haven LLC, we believe that asking for help is a sign of strength—and your reason is reason enough to seek support.
What Is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline?
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support to people experiencing emotional distress or a mental health crisis.
When you call or text 988, you’ll be connected with trained crisis counselors who can listen, provide support, and help you identify resources or next steps.
You don’t need to know exactly what to say.
Sometimes, simply saying “I’m having a difficult time and I need someone to talk to” is enough to start the conversation.
You Don’t Have to Be in a Crisis to Reach Out
One common misconception is that 988 is only for people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts.
While 988 provides crisis support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or concerns, it can also be a resource for people dealing with emotional distress and other difficult situations.
You might reach out because you’re:
- Feeling overwhelmed or emotionally distressed
- Experiencing anxiety or depression
- Struggling with a difficult life situation
- Feeling isolated or alone
- Worried about someone you care about
- Experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm
You don’t have to wait until you’re at your breaking point.
Why Reaching Out Matters
When you’re struggling, it can be tempting to withdraw or believe you should handle everything on your own.
But connecting with another person can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide an opportunity to talk through what you’re experiencing.
Reaching out can be the first step toward finding additional support.
That support might come from a crisis counselor, mental health professional, trusted friend, family member, or another resource.
Asking for help doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re taking care of yourself.
How You Can Support Someone Else
988 Day is also a reminder to look out for the people around us.
If you notice someone struggling, consider checking in. You don’t need to have all the answers.
Try asking:
“How are you really doing?”
Listen without judgment and let them know they don’t have to face their challenges alone. If they’re experiencing a crisis, encourage them to contact 988 or seek appropriate emergency assistance.
A simple conversation can help someone feel seen, heard, and supported.
Your Reason Is Reason Enough
You don’t need to justify why you’re struggling before you deserve support.
Whether you’re having a difficult day, dealing with ongoing emotional challenges, or experiencing a mental health crisis, your feelings matter and your well-being matters.
September 8 is a reminder that support is available.
Call or text 988. Start the conversation. Take the first step.
